Girls Rock Charleston is a local non-profit organization that aims to empower girls and transgender youth through music education, DIY media, and creative collaboration. In order to support this mission, GRC facilitates two programs - a one week day camp held in the summer and an after school program. The GRC after school program, also known as GRASP, launched this past spring. Each week, participants attended two sessions. One session included workshops and the other session included instrument instruction/band practice. All participants formed bands, wrote original songs, and rehearsed those songs in preparation of the Showcase event. The pilot program ended in May and four bands performed on May 3 at the Charleston Pour House.
I currently volunteer as an organizer for the annual summer camp. Despite my lack of involvement with the after school program, I was excited to volunteer my time and document the Showcase. Below are some photographs of the four bands - Light Year, #23, Unfiltered Sound, and The Passive Aggressors.
