Being Happy

A friend once shared this wisdom with me:

Focusing on the past makes us depressed.

Focusing on the future makes us anxious.

Focusing on the present makes us happy.

I do believe that dwelling on the past or getting caught up in the future can cause some serious negative feelings. Still, I’m a firm believer in reflecting on the past to learn from it. I also think it’s important to look toward the future in order to be proactive versus reactive.

Past and future aside, does focusing on the present make us happy?

Yes – if you want it to.

Live each day as if it was your first.

Life is a beautiful mess. The decisions we make today will soon be a part of our past (and will inevitably affect our future). Embrace your surroundings. Pay attention to the details. Allocate your time and energy wisely - spend it on the people/places/things that you truly love.

You can't always control what happens to you but you can control how you react to it. You can choose to not be reduced by disappointment or heartache. You can choose to not allow fear to steer the course of your life.

Be open to opportunities. Take risks. Failure is only guaranteed when you never make an attempt.

Most important of all, live for today.
